Unlike Facebook which tries to sell corporations to us as “friends,” The Pirate Bay dudes are firmly anti-corporate and anti-copyright, just check out their raunchy replies to the many corporate lawsuits they faced. The title of the movie TPB AFK stands for “The Pirate Bay, Away From Keyboard” although I wonder if it shouldn’t be “Never Away From Keyboard” which surely must have been the case with these hacker shut-ins.
Here’s the synopsis from the Swedish filmmakers:

“TPB AFK is a documentary about three computer addicts who redefined the world of media distribution with their hobby homepage The Pirate Bay. How did Tiamo, a beer crazy hardware fanatic, Brokep a tree hugging eco activist and Anakata – a paranoid hacker libertarian – get the White House to threaten the Swedish government with trade sanctions? TPB AFK explores what Hollywood’s most hated pirates go through on a personal level.”

With but two precious weeks of summer left, we’d recommend you download 500 Days of Weezy if you haven’t already. This strange-ass idea from My Sick Uncle is a bizarre pairing of the rhymes of Lil Wayne and the soundtrack to — you guessed it — 500 Days of Summer.

Of his mixtape, My Sick Uncle says: “This is not a mashup album, this is an album about Wayne.” Yes, that quote sounds ridiculous, that is until you hear how snippets of Weezy interviews have been interlaced with Zooey Deschanel’s dialogue from the film. At which point you realize all bets are off.

The point is that this is a hilariously unanticipated combination, and a perplexing soundtrack to the demise of the summer of 2010. Lil Wayne, in the meantime, is approaching the end of his prison bid and rumor has it that Wayne may have big plans for the day he gets out of the big house: releasing Tha Carter IV, and playing a show at Madison Square Garden that night. The man certainly knows how to make an exit.

You may remember seeing one of the scenes projected at Take the Handle‘s second annual fundraiser Glögg party but the completed version is absolutely stunning, especially when viewed in the full screen HD with headphones like the directors recommend.

Here’s the synopsis:

ÍSLAND is a thriller that follows the harrowing plight of blind, 14-year-old THOM and his caretaker GRACE, (Allison Pill). The pair is abducted during their stay in Iceland by twin brothers HALDOR and LARUS (Ingvar Sigurdsson) desperate to fetch a ransom for the affluent Thom. However, when captors and captives alike become trapped underground by an avalanche, the group must work together to escape. This becomes an increasingly impossible task as one of the brothers gradually descends into violent and claustrophobic madness.

Recently I’ve found myself wondering what the sweet spot is, money-wise. Well, it appears the Los Angeles Times might have an answer. According to a recent study by researchers at Princeton, the number is $75,000. Apparently people’s happiness increases in relation to their income up to that numerical point — beyond that, there is no noticeable effect.

The LA Times reports that the study “found that not having enough money definitely causes emotional pain and unhappiness.” Honestly didn’t need the crack team of scientists to deduce that. Expanding on that, the researchers did go on to say that “What the data suggest is that above a certain level of stable income, individuals’ emotional well-being is constrained by other factors in their temperament and life circumstances.”

So if these Princeton Tigers are correct, we’ve got a little number to keep in our heads going forward: 75 G’s will take care of your basic financial anxieties. After that, you’ll have full license to start blaming your problems on something other than money.

The animated spot depicts Google chief Eric Schmidt driving around in an ice-cream trucking looking positively pedophilic. InsideGoogle.com says the ad is intended to highlight the need for a national “do not track me” list but it’s way too quick to convey much of a message other than “Google is Evil” (Text “EVIL” to 69886). What really lingers is the image of cartoon-Eric-Schmidt’s nasty laugh. Check it out if you happen to be in Times Square, or else here on Google’s own Youtube:
