Halloween Maybe Report: The House of the Devil

New Yorkers know it’s important to keep your options open. In a town so full of possibility, the only true answer to an invitation has to be…Maybe.
HORROR!
Out Today
Everything I’ve seen about this movie looks amazing. It’s a horror film set in the ’80s, and it looks as though director Ti West has really nailed the aesthetic. Just take a look at the trailer:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like this has everything you need in a horror film: fear, nostalgia, beauty, blood, terror, the 1980s. The font of the credits alone is enough to make we want to go see the movie. As West made clear in this New York Times feature, he was “very specific about having it be a very realistic period piece, and not…tongue-in-cheek.” He wanted it to be “an accurate depiction of what I remember the ’80s being like.” So instead of being some snarky take on that era of horror, it looks like it’s just a time warp back to a great era for scary movies.
Count me in. This is a date movie if I’ve ever heard of one. Happy Halloween, friends.
You can see The House of the Devil starting today at the Angelika Film Center.
